First Psych Evaluation: It's a Conversation, Not a Test! 🤝
/For many people, the idea of scheduling their first psychiatric evaluation can feel overwhelming.
You may have questions like:
What will happen?
Will I be judged?
How long will it take?
At Forward Counseling, we want to ease those worries by helping you understand what to expect.
Kisha Doebler, one of our compassionate providers, emphasizes that a psychiatric evaluation is simply the first step toward getting the right support for your mental health. It’s not about labeling—it’s about listening, understanding, and creating a care plan tailored to your needs.
What Happens During a First Evaluation?
A first-time evaluation usually takes about 60 to 90 minutes. During this time, Kisha will:
Ask questions about your current concerns and symptoms.
Review your medical, family, and mental health history.
Discuss your lifestyle, stressors, and any past treatments or medications.
Talk with you about your goals for seeking help.
Kisha explains: “My goal is to create a safe and supportive environment where clients feel heard and understood. This first step helps us decide together what treatment options—whether therapy, medication, or lifestyle changes—are the best fit.”
What to Consider Before Your Appointment
Write down any symptoms you’ve noticed and how long you’ve had them.
Bring a list of medications or supplements you’re currently taking.
Be open about your challenges, even if they feel difficult to share—this helps your provider see the full picture.
Remember, there are no “wrong answers.” The evaluation is about understanding, not judgment.
What Happens After the Evaluation?
At the end of your first visit, Kisha will share her insights and possible next steps. This might include therapy sessions, medication management, or referrals to other specialists if needed. Importantly, you’ll leave with a personalized treatment plan designed around your needs and goals.
Kisha adds: “It’s normal to feel nervous before your first session, but once clients realize it’s simply a conversation about their life, many feel relief. This is the beginning of healing.”
Why Take the Step?
Your mental health matters. A psychiatric evaluation can be the doorway to feeling better, finding balance, and regaining hope. As Kisha reminds us: “Seeking help is not a sign of weakness—it’s a brave step toward wellness.”
